The Blog
This blog will be all about film reviews. I'm going to be watching a lot of movies, writing reviews, and hopefully not spoiling any movies you plan to watch.
Director: F.W. Murnau Verdict: Meh The early horror film Nosferatu is a story of Count Orlok (Nosferatu), a vampire living in Transylvania. He is visited by a Hutter, a home salesman from the german town of Wisborg. Hutter is trying to sell Orlok an empty home across the street from his. When Orlok catches a glimpse of a picture Hutter has of his wife, he immediately buys the house. That night Nosferatu attempts to attack Hutter. The next day, Nosferatu departs in a coffin, bound for his new house. Hutter is hospitalized after attempting to escape out the window of the castle. Orlok finds himself aboard a barge where rats carrying the plague begin killing the crew. Nosferatu kills the captain after he ties himself to the wheel. Now in the town, Nosferatu begins hunting victims but always thinking of Ellen, Hutter's wife. Finally one night, with Hutter looking for a doctor, Nosferatu makes his move and begins drinking Ellen's blood. However he forgets the daylight coming and is killed by the coming sun. Throughout the movie, Murnau made extensive use of lighting. By using shadows, he manages to foreshadow and increase the suspense and terror felt by the audience. For the early audiences, the image of Nosferatu's shadow along the wall creeping would have been beyond scary since this was one of the original horror movies. Murnau used unconventional, formalist camera angles which helps set a slightly unsettling and awkward feel which increases the sense of malice within the film.

If you liked this movie, there is a biopic on the making of this movie. Perhaps my mind is just mush with stress, but I'm pretty sure it is called Shadow of the Vampire by Werner Herzog. *Note: I was way off on that Werner Herzog thing. Stress alternate reality.*
