The Blog
This blog will be all about film reviews. I'm going to be watching a lot of movies, writing reviews, and hopefully not spoiling any movies you plan to watch.
Director: Ridley Scott The Martian is a movie adaptation of Andy Weir's novel of the same name. It is about a NASA mission to Mars that goes bad and results in astronaut Mark Watney being left on Mars, thought dead by his fellow astronauts and the world. He finds ways to keep himself alive and contact NASA and together both sides work on a way to rescue him and bring him back to Earth. The movie attempts to make the movie out as a comedy while also having heart stopping moments of drama. However the mood swings from comedy to suspense and sadness is to extreme and awkward, giving the movie a strange feel that it doesn't really know what it wants to be. The novel is very clear cut and obvious that it is comedic and the moments of seriousness still have some light hearted injections to even it out. The movie has an overriding theme of perseverance and pushing on in the face of adversity. However on the flip side, it also makes a big at the way our government is run and the people who are running it. When deciding how to rescue Mark after the supply rocket explodes, "Teddy" Sanders is in favor of the plan that will keep him safely in his current job, not what will most likely save Mark Watney. Ridley Scott and Andy Weir are showing how the current government isn't concerned with what is right but what will protect their jobs.

Olympus Has Fallen is about the White House being attacked and taken over by North Koreans with the goal of detonating all the U.S. nuclear weapons. A former Secret Service agent who was fired for letting the President's wife die must try and save the President and stop the terrorists. Olympus Has Fallen looks like normal action movie...and it is. The movie doesn't really try and trick you in any way. It holds your hand and guides you through the movie with little strain on the brain. The only moments that really make the audience feel any stress was in scenes where the movie catches you up in the action. If you are really paying attention, all of the stress is false, the protagonist always lives, the antagonist always loses. The filming itself is not that bad except its very bland. There is nothing special and it relies heavily on CGI. It's an alright action movie that is entertaining if you don't actually think while watching it. At all.
Director: Ridley Scott
Black Hawk Down was about the infamous incident where a U.S. helicopter was shot down during a military operation. As a result, 19 U.S. serviceman were killed. Ridley Scott's portrayal of this was brilliant in that he showed both sides of the conflict. He showed the Somalis preparing that day, not knowing what was to common. But what really blew me away was how the emotion was showed. The stress of combat and the death that surrounded men was beyond evident. The realism displayed was stunning and the lengths taken to make the viewer feel as if they are in the fight and are experiencing what the men went through. The final scene when the men are safe and relived to be alive was particularly moving because it all suddenly seemed so real what these men had just endured. Director: Roger Donaldson
The November Man was a movie with a main actor who perfectly fills the main character spot. Having Pierce Brosnan was a big addition to the movie as he not only is a big name that increases the films image but he genuinely was a game changer for the movie. He is an incredibly talented actor built for the part. The plot was rather complex and requires you to really pay attention or else you will quickly get lost in the fast pace of the movie. However, it even if you lose focus, the movie still entertains with ease to those who love lots of action. But if you stick to the movie and really watch it, it rewards you by adding to the tension and intrigue of the plot. Director: J.J. Abrams
Everyone knows Star Wars. Even if you live under a rock, you know what Star Wars is. After a disastrous Prequel Trilogy, the news that a final Sequel Trilogy would be coming out puts a lot of pressure on those making the film. The way that they accomplished this was by doing a digital remastering of one of the original three movies. The Force Awakens used the very plot of A New Hope. The only difference was the special effects. I'm not sure if the idea behind this was just wanting to make people feel nostalgic or if they honestly thought they were being original. On it's own, the movie was great! its action packed, suspenseful, and has characters you can feel emotion for. If this movie was on its own, and the previous six movies had never existed, it would be brilliant. But the previous six movies DO exist and that means that the next two movies have a very strong possibility of being remastered versions of those that have gone before them. |
